Informations about the individual DVDs

For 30 years we publish the films by Christoph Schlingensief. Now we continue the series with treasures from the archive with a particularly beautiful and elaborate Edition. The aim is to make unknown works, that were previously accessible only to a small circle, visible in optimal quality.
A special feature is that the DVDs  have not only one feature film, but a much more extensive collection of material, that allows a private access to each work without a comment. So there are, for example, of the theater works several records, sample recordings, change of perspective and interviews. Projection films of "The Animatograph" or of the theater plays can be seen for the first time separately. Many clips, films and the "Atta Atta" - lectures were cut by Christoph Schlingensief original video team for the DVD edition and for the DVD booklets some additional texts were written by Christoph Schlingensief's playwrights.
Except for EGOMANIA, MUTTERS MASK, THE 120 DAYS OF BOTTROP and UNITED TRASH (restored films) all DVDs are previously unpublished. All major films are subtitled in English for the first time, also to make it internationally accessible.
The Edition create in cooperation and with the support of the Goethe Institute Munich.

EGOMANIA – ISLAND WITHOUT HOPE (1986)
Restored film - DVD with 107 min. running time
"Egomania" is a tract on the power of evil. The devil (Udo Kier) meets the Virgin Mary (Tilda Swinton): A young woman and her admirer live on a deserted island. Their love is endangered when a baron appears and his coldness infects the island's inhabitants. He turns out to be a schizophrenic shapeshifter who moves between worlds and sexes, as the devil – and his aunt. To put any feeling on ice, he sets all the forces of darkness in motion. – With Udo Kier, Tilda Swinton, Uwe Fellensiek, Anna Fechter, Anastasia Kudelka u.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: EGOMANIA – ISLAND WITHOUT HOPE

MOTHER'S MASK (1988)
Restored film - DVD with 137 min. running time
Christoph Schlingensief's fourth feature film, "Mother's Mask", is the ultimate remake of Veit Harlan's Nazi melodrama "Opfergang" ("The Great Sacrifice", 1944): Upon returning home, Willy von Mühlenbeck must realize that his evil brother Martin has ascended to the head of their industrialist family – and that his ill mother is now in the grips of sinister doctors. When he falls in love with their terminally-ill neighbor Els, fate takes its tragic course. – With Helge Schneider, Udo Kier, Brigitte Kausch, Susanne Bredehöft a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: MOTHER'S MASK

UNITED TRASH (1995)
Restored film - DVD with 159 min. running time
His eighth feature, "United Trash", brings the "First World", Western civilization and the "German essence" back to Africa: Brenner, a gay general, tyrannizes the people in a UN camp in Zimbabwe. His wife gives birth to darkskinned Peter Panne, he has a deep cleft on his head and the locals worship him as the Messiah. Everyone wants to use the boy for their own ends. The overarching question is: Can Peter stop a leftover V2 missile from being launched at the White House? – Mit Udo Kier, Kitten Natividad, Thomas Chibwe, Joachim Tomaschewsky a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: UNITED TRASH

THE 120 DAYS OF BOTTROP (1997)
Restored film - DVD with 200 min. running time
Christoph Schlingenisefs ninth feature "The 120 Days of Bottrop" is a homage and swan song to Fassbinder – a hard blow against the German Film. The surviver of the Fassbinder family meet on Potsdamer Platz for the shooting oft he Last New German Film – a remake of Pasolini’s "The 120 Days of Sodom". Chaos total: Director Schlingensief, degraded to a set manager, will be replaced by an unknown, who get’s the Bundesfilmpreis award. Film as a nightmare - or vice versa. – With Udo Kier, Margit Carstensen, Irm Hermann, Volker Spengler, Martin Wuttke, Sophie Rois, Bernhard Schütz, Helmut Berger a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: THE 120 DAYS OF BOTTROP

CHANCE 2000 – LAST CHANCE PARTY (1998)
Including 40-page Booklet – 2 DVDs with 374 min. running time
The party "Chance 2000" was Schlingensief's biggest, most public project up to that point: For the 1998 general election Schlingensief organized an "election campaign circus" in Berlin and founded the party Chance2000. This is an ecstatic piece of political education and a tale of a party’s life and survival. – With Werner Brecht, Ilse Garzaner, Kurt Garzaner, Mario Garzaner, Kerstin Grassman, Carl Hegemann, Dietrich Kuhlbrodt a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: CHANCE 2000 – LAST CHANCE PARTY

U3000 (2000)
All episodes - DVD with 305 min. running time
In the TV series "U3000" Christoph Schlingensief mutates into a loathsome host and bloodthirsty exorcist who casts the television out of the television. Established TV formats are parodied and plundered on a running Berlin subway. Pop stars, MTV generation bands, AIDS patients and welfare recipients – in the "U3000" subway, they are merely fillers for an all-devouring medium and its high priest, Schlingensief. – With Maria und Margot Hellwig, Christian Anders, Roberto Blanco, Bärbel Schäfer a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: U3000

HAMLET (2001)
Including a theater record, interviews and a documentary - DVD with 349 min. running time
His staging of "Hamlet" at Schauspielhaus Zürich takes shots at the right-wing populist Swiss People's Party (SVP). Schlingensief's "Hamlet" can be interpreted as a tribute to the classic – it even includes audio recordings from the legendary 1963 Gustaf Gründgens' staging. Neo-Nazis perform on the streets and appear in "Hamlet" as the acting troop in the play within the play, challenging Swiss proclamations of "neutrality" and "lack of radicalism." – With: Peter Kern, Irm Hermann, Sebastian Rudolph, Michael Gempart, Bibiana Beglau a.m.m. (English and Japanese subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: HAMLET

QUIZ 3000 (2002)
Including a theater record and 4 Best-ofs - DVD with 372 min. running time
"Quiz 3000" presents what is for him the only acceptable form of serial dramatic art in this theatrical “televisionary” TV quiz show. "Quiz 3000" was inspired by the German version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?." Schlingensief frees the show from the idiot box and turns it into a live theatrical event. He plays the host, who isn't stingy with winnings and doesn't shy away from asking questions about concentration camps, conspiracy theories and weapons of mass destruction. – With: Christoph Schlingensief, Brigitte Kausch-Kuhlbrodt, Dietrich Kuhlbrodt a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: QUIZ 3000

ATTA ATTA – Art Has Broken Loose (2003)
3 DVDs with 962 min. running time
The theatrical production "Atta Atta" – Part 1 of Schlingensief’s "Atta trilogy" – is set between his parents’ home, an amateur film club and his alter ego’s studio.
Once Schlingensief has razed his own biography, "Atta Atta" unveils a campsite with a perch, artificial turf and fake flowers – this is where art has made itself comfy. The rest of , "Atta Atta" is Schlingensief's attempt to break loose from this gilded cage through pure actionism. – With Josef Bierbichler, Irm Hermann, Christoph Schlingensief, Dietrich Kuhlbrodt  a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: ATTA ATTA - Art Has Broken Loose

ART AND VEGETABLES, A. HIPLER (2004)
Including two stagings – 2 DVDs with 283 min. running time
"Art and Vegetables" is Schlingensief's attempt at self-therapy after the trauma of directing "Parsifal" in Bayreuth: Schlingensief has African artist Hosea Dzingirai and ALS patient Angela Jansen assume live direction of "Art and Vegetables". Jansen intervenes via a computer from a bed in the audience. Revenants from the art scene take the stage. Arnold Schoenberg's twelve-tone opera "From One Day to the Next" provides the soundtrack. – With Matthias Badzong, Maria Baton, Klaus Beyer, Ulrike Bindert, Jürgen Drenhaus a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: ART AND VEGETABLES, A. HIPLER

THE ANIMATOGRAPH (2005)
Including the Iceland, German, Africa Edition – DVD with 232 min. running time
"The Animatograph" is a conglomeration of various media: cinema, theater, performance, installation, painting and opera. "The Animatograph" is a revolving stage that Schlingensief frees from the confines of the theater in four editions; it is a space for projections, words, pictures and sounds that is accessible to the audience. "The Animatograph" is the culmination of Schlingensief's work. In it, he melds everyday life, politics and art in a living cycle – and sets them spinning. – With Karin Witt, Klaus Beyer, Christoph Schlingensief, Jörg van der Horst, Sachiko Hara a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: THE ANIMATOGRAPH

THE AFRICAN TWIN TOWERS – THE RING – 9/11 (2005)
Including 40-page Booklet – 2 DVDs with 399 min. running time
"ATT" is about Richard Wagner, 9/11, Hagen von Tronje, Odin and the Edda, and the construction of the African Animatograph.
Fragments of a shock. Planned as a film about the Wagner Festival in former German Southwest Africa and filmed in Namibia, it treats the viewer to a parallel world of surreal acts that only the observer can piece together. No work preyed on Schlingensief’s mind like this one. Fragments of "ATT" appear in several of his projects. – With Irm Hermann, Robert Stadlober, Christoph Schlingensief, Patti Smith a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: THE AFRICAN TWIN TOWERS – THE RING – 9/11

Christoph Schlingensief's second Wagner work "The Flying Dutchman" he realized in the framework of XI. Festival Amazonas de Ópera in Manaus (Brasil). In April 2007 Schlingensief staged Wagner’s opera in Manaus. He leaves the theatre and goes into the jungle as on the Rio Negro before going  back into the Teatro Amazonas. 18 short films, he’s shooting meanwhile, will be part oft he installation "Trem Fantasma" (an opera ghost train) in São Paulo end of 2007. – With Gary Simpson, Stephen Bronk, Eiko Senda, Ricardo Tuttmann, Elaine Martorano, Martin Muehle a.m.m. Including "The Intermediary State of Things" (Maxim Gorki Theater) - 2 DVDs with 370 min. running time
His Fluxus Oratorio "A Church of Fear vs. The Alien Within" is devoted to his cancer diagnosis that same year: Fear is the rock on which Schlingensief builds his church. In it he probes his relationship to God and to himself; it is a journey to himself. The church interior is modeled on that of his hometown Church of the Sacred Heart in Oberhausen. He creates images, confessions and litanies that trace the intruder and examine the fear of death. – With Margit Carstensen, Angela Winkler, Mira Partecke, Komi Mizrajim Togbonou, Stefan Kolosko a.m.m. (English subtitles)
DVD Informations, Credits & Content: A CHURCH OF FEAR VS. THE ALIEN WITHIN

VIA INTOLLERANZA II (2010)
Including 2 theater records (2010 & 2011) – 2 DVDs with 323 min. running time
"Via Intolleranza II" was Christoph Schlingensief's last play, performed with artists from Burkina Faso, where his
"Opera Village Africa" lives on as his legacy to this day. Schlingensief’s figure praises himself on stage as the founder of the "Opera Village Africa" and defames himself as a colonialist and missionary out to teach the poor about culture. The rest is an African cultural program and Western navel-gazing on the level of a promotional tour aimed at opening the audience’s wallets. An excruciating balancing act between morality and reality. – With Brigitte Cuvelier, Kerstin Grassmann, Stefan Kolosko, Abdoul Kader Traoré, Amado Komi a.m.m. (English, Frensh, German subtitles)
