„Screwball made in Hamburg. Voilà, here comes Pia Frankenberg.“ — Wiener, 1988
In 1981 she made her first short film Sehnsucht nach dem ganz Anderen, followed by The Assualt in 1984. In 1985 in wintry Hamburg Pia Frankenberg shot her first comedy, Noisy Martha, which was awarded the Max Ophüls Preis. Burning Beds, starring English singer and punk trailblazer Ian Dury, won the viewers' choice award (Prix du Public) at the Vevey International Funny Film Festival in 1988. In 1991 she made the feature Never Sleep Again set in the no-man's-land flanking the Berlin Wall along the former inner German border.
The DVD Collection brings together her three feature-length and two short films for the first time, supplemented by two location-tours (Hamburg and Berlin) with Pia Frankenberg, original theatrical trailer and a booklet.
DVD 1 – NOISY MARTHA
Screenplay, Director, Producer: Pia Frankenberg, GER 1985, 87 min, b/w
"Noisy Martha comes across as a collage of small details, of scenes and episodes partially nondramatic and everyday, partially grotesquely exaggerated - all rendered from the point of view of Martha, a well-off young woman with a little son, a woman who makes films. [...] In the personal sequences the vacillation and lack of orientation of the former protest generation are imparted with a sense of amusement and self-irony.“ (KINO – German Film, 1986) "Best German-language newcomer film" (Max Ophüls Preis 1986) – With Pia Frankenberg, Ilona Ribowski-Bruwer, Klaus Bueb, Adelina Almeida, Thomas Struck, Alfred Edel, Dieter Kosslick, Hark Bohm / Director of Photography: Thomas Mauch
Extras: Two short films by Pia Frankenberg THE ASSUALT (GER 1984, 9 min) and SEHNSUCHT NACH DEM GANZ ANDEREN (GER 1981, 13 min), original theatrical trailer, booklet (12 pages), DD 2.0, Language: German, Subtitles: English, French

DVD 2 – BURNING BEDS
Screenplay, Director, Producer: Pia Frankenberg, GER 1988, 83 min., Color + 34 min Extras
Burning Beds: "But it was Pia Frankenberg who got the Veveyan public's vote, for her London/Hamburg comedy Burning Beds. This stars Ian Dury as a pyromaniacal kettle drummer who leaves his wife and kids and sets up in Hamburg with a rather strange woman (Frankenberg). Burning Beds also picked up a special mention from the international jury.“ (Screen International, 1988) "Grand Audience Award" and "Special prize of the jury" (Vevey International Funny Film Festival 1988) – With Ian Dury, Pia Frankenberg, Gerhard Garbers, Frances Tomelty, Christiane Carstens, René Schoenenberger, Susanne Schäfer, Lutz Förster, Werner Eichhorn, Klaus Wyborny / Director of Photography: Raoul Coutard

Never Sleep Again focuses on three women navigating the city just after reunification. Frankenberg said her film was about a city coming to terms with a new reality but also three women who embraced their own personal freedom and a “more nonchalant way of living and doing the same things as men do but in their own way”. (The Guardian, 2019) – With Lisa Kreuzer, Gabi Herz, Christiane Carstens, Ernst Stötzner, Michael Altmann, Leonard Lansink, Peter Lohmeyer, Klaus Bueb, Thomas Struck / Director of Photography: Judith Kaufmann
