Press reviews
Approaching her protagonist on equal terms, the director uses both picture and sound to develop a vision of an alternative tropical world as a counterpoint to West Berlin’s barren Gropiusstadt projects. - Berlinale Retrospective 2019 about I OFTEN THINK OF HAWAII
The cinematic homage to the elderly residents of a care home in Hamburg approaches the inner world of dementia with experimental sound and image montage, depicting the unconventional support of the young caretakers who manage to bridge the generations, and shedding light on the topic of love in old age by focusing on two old women who found each other in this home. - Clarissa Thieme / Arsenal 2023 about WAS SOLL'N WIR DENN MACHEN OHNE DEN TOD
The story of Mary Stuart, which is marked by violence, betrayal and death, is shown in this moving photo story as a failed attempt at emancipation. - Deutsche Kinemathek 2025 about EXECUTION. A STUDY OF MARY
Through understated imagery, Elfi Mikesch explores the world of a very unique individual, touches on fundamental questions of life, and puts the concept of normality into perspective. - Viennale 1997 about VERRÜCKT BLEIBEN, VERLIEBT BLEIBEN
Many expensive films in the competition are already forgotten by the time you leave the theater; Elfi Mikesch’s film about Markus Anatol Weisse, on the other hand, will stay with you for a long time to come. - taz 2000 about THE MARKUS FAMILY
Wünsdorf symbolizes the transition from war to peace, from the GDR to the FRG, and the shift toward a post-migrant society and a sustainable way of life. The question of war or peace takes on new urgency in light of Russia’s attack on Ukraine during the filming. Elfi Mikesch’s documentary encourages us to constantly ask ourselves how we want to live. - Filmlöwin 2024 about WAR OR PEACE
The films highlight the relevance of this approach, bringing back to life what is absent from memory in historical places and Elfi Mikesch’s unique talent as a chronicler of the hidden. - artechock 2025 about GEFÄHRLICHE ORTE
