MAROC EN VOGUE Irene von Alberti, D 2006, 30 min

Headscarf and catwalk

Bouchra Zoubir is 17 years old and lives in Tanger, Morocco. Her life is typical for many Moroccan women. Bouchra comes from a normal, functioning, albeit large family with little money that does fairly well for itself. From the roof of her parent's house, Bouchra can see the Gilbraltar rock – Europe is almost within her grasp…

Bouchra dropped out of school at 15 to begin a tailoring apprenticeship. Her biggest dream is to become a fashion designer. Film maker Irene von Alberti has known Bouchra since she was a little girl. For the 3sat series "Mädchengeschichten", she has portrayed a young woman in an Islamic boom town who embodies a new confidence that is typical for many others in her generation. It combines Western expectations of modernity with Moroccan traditions in a very headstrong way.
